Somerton Town 1 Wrington Redhill 2

This week’s fixture was a tough away game to promotion contenders Somerton Town which has not been a happy hunting ground in recent seasons. So, this was a strong test to determine whether Wrington Redhill could retain their third spot position and show that they too are real contenders to clinch one of the promotion spots in the league.

From the first whistle Wrington Redhill flew out of the blocks immediately taking the game to their hosts and were given a dream start when in only the second minute Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi opened the scoring when he latched onto a through ball from midfield, held off two defenders, and fired past the shocked keeper Jake Davies. Somerton were relying on long balls out of defence to their lively forward line but the back line of Josh Pitt, Dan Ferguson , Ethan Johnson and Jordon Bonner werequick in regaining possession and so it was Wrington Redhill who dominated much of the first half with relentless probing of the opposition defence.

Deserving of their play the lead was increased this time with Sam Parkinson feeding Jack Hutchings who shookoff his markers and slotted the ball across Davies into the bottom corner. Taking a first half lead of 2-0 was crucial as the signs were that Somerton were swift on the counter attack and Wrington Redhill had to defend the pitch slope in the second period.

So it proved with Somerton throwing everything forward and putting the visitors on the back foot. But the defence held well, with Matt Hill dealing with what came his way, and midfield three Leigh White, Sam Parkinson and Ryan Pugh kept resolute to the cause. As the half progressed Ayrton Phillips and Joe Creese  were introduced to add fresh legs with Creese becoming a threatening outlet and both he and Phillips had chances and with a bit more clinical reaction in front of goal Wrington Redhill should have extended their lead.

Somerton did all they could to try to salvage the game and with five minutes left on the clock Joe Grimstead found the net with terrific strike from the left but this was not enough as Wrington Redhill held firm for an excellent win. This was indeed an all-round strong teamperformance with everyone deserving credit for an excellent game.

The Supporters’ Player of the Match was Dan Ferguson.
