Wrington Redhill 0 Uphill Castle 1. Tuesday 23rd April

Wrington Redhill 4 Worle 0. Thursday 25th April

Wrington Redhill 1 Stockwood Wanderers 3. Saturday 27th April

This was the week which would almost certainly determine the fete of Wrington Redhill’s end of season battle against the real threat of relegation after just one season competing in the top Premier division.

With three games to be crammed in over a 5-day period this was going to be a tough time for the small squad and in each game, they gave their all for the management team of Leigh White, Mark Brown, and Sam Clements.

The week started on Tuesday evening with the first of two local derbies against teams also scrapping for survival in the top division. The visitors were Uphill Castle and both sides competed in an even contest with neither side creating any real chances of scoring. For Wrington Redhill, Ollie Clements made a last-ditch block and Regan D’Arcy made a good save. At the other end Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi saw his shot well saved by Ryan Scott.

It looked like a scrappy game would end all square when a late goal from Jack Askins clinched the game very late giving the home side very little time to pull one back.

Onto Thursday night and a victory was now crucial, this time with Worle the opposition, another team in the danger zone.

Wrington Redhill bounced back with an excellent performance with a 4-0 win. A first half hat trick fromGeorge Fake, his first a left foot rocket from a tight angle bursting the goal net. He was also instrumental in playing a delightful pass to Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi to seal the game in the second half, driving the ball past Ryan Hodrien.

A good all-round performance with skipper Dan Ferguson leading his team in fine style.

So on to Saturday, playing their fourth game in 8 days this time hosting high flying Stockwood Wanderers.

Wrington Redhill looked surprisingly energetic and up for the fight as manager Leigh White had obviously instructed them to get out and get at it from the start.

They spent most of the first 25 minutes camped in the opposition half without creating much other than a shot from George Fake from the edge of the box that was well held by Matt Lewis in goal for Stockwood. That all changed on 30 minutes when the visitors took the lead as James Wolland pounced on a loose ball and smashed it past Regan D’Arcy in goal for Wrington. Wrington continued to dominate, and things were looking good for them when Stockwood had Lyon Chappell sent off for clattering into Max Smith, who was dominating midfield, and then swore twice at the referee when he awarded a free kick. Half time came and Wrington were looking confident at 1 down but with a 1 man advantage.

That advantage disappeared when the second half got underway, and Ethan Johnson committed two bookable offences and was himself sent off. The equaliser came on the hour as Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi set up goal machine George Fake on his left foot and he made no mistake. Things were then even for a long spell until Stockwood’s Charlie Perkins got away down the right and fired in a cross which was met on the volley at the far post by Conrad Britton whose powerful shot flew in off the crossbar giving D’Arcy no chance. Wrington Redhill then went on the offensive and shooting opportunities fell to Josh Pitt and Martt Walsh, but nothing came of it.

With the home side pushing for an equaliser Stockwood went further ahead when a spectacular volley over his shoulder by Britton flew into the top corner for 3-1.

Despite the two losses there is still an outside chance of avoiding the drop, but the team must win both of their last two games and rely on results elsewhere going their way. Next action comes at home on Tuesday night against Clutton before a final game away to Ilminster on 11thMay.

Hopefully, a big crowd will cheer the team on Tuesday in their quest to avoid relegation.
