Wrington Redhill 1  Ashton & Backwell Reserves 0

Having dropped two points in last week’s home fixture it was important for Wrington Redhill to get back to winning ways to keep them in the chase for the top positions in the league.

This week’s visitors were near neighbours Ashton and Backwell Reserves looking to establish themselves in this division having gained promotion the previous season.

The home side starting line-up was dealt an early setback when in form striker George Fake was ruled out due to family reasons, with Ollie Clements and Joe Creese also absent with injuries. Although the squad was being sorely stretched nonetheless there was a welcome return of Sam Harvey and Josh Pitt, both stepping straight in adding an energy to the team. Kyran Garrett retained a place on the bench with veterans and club stalwarts Rory Thomas and Chris Bradley joining him for company.

Wrington Redhill were immediately on the front foot with high energy pressing of the opposition and moving the ball quickly and causing danger on the attack. This led to an early goal when a quick break won a corner and although an initial part clearance was made Dan Ferguson was on hand and his deep cross into the area was chested down by Ryan Pugh and then rifled into the bottom corner to score in consecutive games for the Club.

A heavy pitch was a leveller in a game that did not have many chances being forged and when Harvey had to leave the field due to feeling unwell, saw the arrival of Kyran Garrett making his first team debut following in the footsteps of his father Simon and grandfather Alan, a lovely memento for the Garrett family.

The second half became a stop start affair with both teams huffing and puffing and the referee penalising every bit of player contact with numerous free kicks but the hosts kept their concentration seeking to add a second goal and keeping it tight defensively with Matt Walsh, Ferguson, Ethan Johnson and Jordan Bonner in tigerish mood.

Leigh White and Josh Pitt kept working hard in the middle with good support from Garrett. Reece Ferguson Obamwonyi and Jack Hutchings battled for the scraps that came their way which resulted in both Ashton and Backwell’s centre backs picking up yellow cards. Late on Matt Hill tipped a deflected shot over the crossbar which was virtually all he had to do throughout the game.

The team saw out the game with both Rory Thomas and Chris Bradley replacing Pugh and Hutchings and the narrow 1-0 victory and results elsewhere seen the return to third spot in the league.

The Club would like to extend their best wishes to George Fake and his partner Kelly whilst she is in hospital.

The Supporters’ Player of the Match was Josh Pitt.
