Wrington Redhill 0 Yatton and Cleeve Utd 1

Wrington Redhill’s eight games undefeated in the league came to an end against local rivals Yatton & Cleeve United at the Recreation Field. It was missed chances that cost the hosts the game when on another day such chances would have been put away. The game itself was a wholehearted affair from both sides as you would expect as third and fourth teams vying for a league promotion spot.

Yatton & Cleeve sought to find their quick wide players quickly and attempting to get crosses into the Wrington Redhill’s goal area, but skipper Dan Ferguson and Ethan Johnson stood solid with good support from full backs Josh Pitt and Matt Walsh.

The hosts first clear cut chance fell to Joe Creese who raced on to an excellent through ball from Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi but just failed to lift it over the advancing keeper Tom Murphy. Soon after Creese became the provider for George Fake who saw his shot go wide and then the same two linked up again ending in Murphy  tipping the ball over the crossbar from Fake’s headed goalward effort. On the stroke of half time Leigh White was clean through with all the time in the world to pick his spot but a poor finish struck wide saw the conclusion of the half at all square.

Wrington Redhill’s football was a lot crisper in the second period with Sam Harvey White and Ayrton Phillips seeking to get the front runners into the game more but remarkably found themselves a goal down from Yatton & Cleeve’s only shot on target. All credit to Tommy Wellings who chased a ball from left to right and on reaching it, held his nerve, and rifled a superb strike past Matt Hill.

Wrington Redhill continued to push forward seeking an equalising goal and two great chances came Fake’s way and whilst he has enjoyed good scoring form all season even he couldn’t find the vital finishing touches on this occasion.

The tiring Fake was replaced by Travis Yule-Turner and his fresh legs and movement started to cause more problems for the home defence but the elusive goal would not come. Pushing forward left themselves exposed to a swift counter attack and as a Ferguson pass was cut out, keeper Hill was faced with a striker bearing down on goal and his attempt to save the day was punished by a penalty awarded against him and a yellow card for good measure. Fortunately Elliott Shipway blasted the spot kick high over the bar giving the home side hope still to gain something from the game. Kyran Garrett came in on the right in place of Josh Pitt and tried to push forward as much as possible and linking well to help keep his team on the front foot.

Unfortunately, the equaliser just would not come, but the overall performance was solid and the team are still in contention for promotion and look to return to winning ways next Saturday in their home fixture to Castle Cary when kick off time reverts back to 3.00pm.
