Wrington Redhill 1 Clevedon Utd 1

Wrington Redhill faced Clevedon United in their first fixture of 2024, seeking revenge for a heavy defeat earlier in the season.

The hosts got into their stride and were taking the game to their visitors and their first chance came when Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi raced onto a through ball from Rhys Farmer which ended with his shot being well saved by former Wrington Redhill keeper James Williams. Another good opportunity fell to George Fake as Ayrton Phillips was put through by Leigh White, Fake’s effort from Phillips’ pass was easily saved by Williams.

On a very heavy and boggy pitch the game was quite scrappy with Clevedon, In the main looking to break on the counter but the solid back line of Ollie Clements, Rhys Farmer, Jordon Bonner, marshalled by skipper Dan Ferguson coped well ably supported by our young keeper Regan D’Arcy who grows in confidence with each passing game However just before half time a moment of lapsed concentration allowed Clevedon to go ahead through Fraser Linnet for a 1-0 interval lead.

Wrington Redhill upped the tempo as the second half began with Josh Pitt in commanding form in the central midfield role enabling him to find the forward runs of the full backs Clements and Bonner in support of Ethan Williams and Ferguson-Obamwonyi with Phillips pushing further forward to pressure the Clevedon defence.

As the game progressed Rory Thomas replaced Williams for fresh impetus down the left flank and Matt Walsh replaced the injured White. He took the right back berth with Clements moving into midfield. The home side’s pressure was finally rewarded when Ferguson-Obamwonyi provided the cutting pass for Fake to stay calm and pass the ball into the net for a well-deserved equaliser.

Each team then had half chances to clinch the game, but a draw was a fair result and provided a valuable point for Wrington Redhill to start building on for the second half of the season ahead.
