Wrington Redhill 1 Clutton 0

There was no weekend fixture but there was a very watchful eye on other results on the day that would affectWrington Redhill’s end of season plight. There was however a midweek game at the Recreation Field

The visitors, Clutton, whilst firmly rooted to the bottom of the league table had earned a draw in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season at their ground and inflicted a 5-1 defeat in a County Cup tie, so the hosts had to be very much respectful to their opponents to ensure there was no repeat of the scorelines.

This was a must win game if Wrington Redhill’s late surge to avoid relegation would still be possible. With skipper Dan Ferguson a late withdrawal due to work commitments the ever-dependable experienced Rhys Farmer stepped in to marshal the defence alongside Ethan Johnson and full backs Ollie Clements and Jordon Bonner who all did their utmost to defend Regan D’Arcy’s goal area. It was crucial not to concede an early goal.

For lengthy periods of the game Wrington Redhill were enjoying the possession and a few chances fell to Joe Creese, George Fake and Sam Harvey but none converted as increased tension was being felt on the sidelines reflecting the importance of the required result.

Continuing with his impressive run in the team, 16-year-old Max Smith was trojan in his covering of the midfield area, with untiring running and breaking up Clutton’s play. This enabled Sam Harvey and Josh Pitt to prompt the attacking support for the front line with Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi causing all sorts of problems with his direst dribbling skills and enduring a torrid time as he was impeded repeatedly.

The crucial goal came when another foul was conceded on the edge of the Clutton box right of centre. Who would take this one as other attempts had not come to anything?Sam Harvey was eyeing up the situation as he had scored from similar positions this season, but Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi accepted the challenge, and he superbly curled his shot high into the right corner of the net to the elation of all at the ground. A most fitting goal to clinch such a vital win.

Whilst to their credit Clutton continued to battle they were unable to claw anything back with the final whistle bringing an end to the game at 1-0.

So, the fight goes on to the last game of the season away to Ilminster Town on Saturday. To stay up Wrington Redhill must win and then await the results of the last games of Somerton (playing Monday) and Worle also playing on Saturday. What ever the outcome there has certainly been a heroic effort to avoid the drop as only a few weeks ago this looked an impossible fate.
