Wrington Redhill 2 Fry Club 1

This win against a Fry team competing at the top end of the table with the prospect of promotion in the pyramid system topped of a wonderful week for Wrington Redhill in their battle to escape relegation. The management team picked up their tight squad of players after the heavy defeat of the previous week to get them back focused on the games ahead.

Earlier in the week the team visited Keynsham Town Reserves and earned a hard fought 1 nil victory with a goal from Ben Griffith clinching the fully deserved three points.

For the Fry’s game Jordon Bonner returned to the left side of defence and Josh Pitt moved into midfield and formed a powerful combination with Sam Harvey and Travis Yule-Turner.

There was an evident contrast in styles with Fry’s playing very directly whilst Wrington Redhill kept to their short, sharp passing game. The home side were rewarded when a Yule-Turner defence splitting pass put Joe Creese through one on one with keeper Callum Fry who parried the first effort, but Creese made no mistake with the rebound and slotted home for his 10th goal of the season.

This goal spurred on the team who dominated the game at this point, but further goals eluded them with Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi causing so much of the threat with Harvey and Pitt providing a lot of link play with him. Against the run of play Fry’s equalised when a long range shot from defender Sam Knight, took a wicked deflection, and whizzed past Regan D’Arcy who would surely have saved if the ball had not been deflected, for a half time 1-1 scoreline.

The restart saw Fry’s up their efforts but the Wrington Redhill back line of Ollie Clements, Dan Ferguson, Ethan Johnson, and Bonner, shielded by the tenacious Max Smith just in front of them, limited Fry’s only strike of note when a shot cannoned off the crossbar. This good work allowed the front players to create rapid counter attacks.

Fry’s were struggling to contain the pressing and running power of Ferguson-Obamwonyi, Yule-Turner, Harvey, Pitt and Creese and were committing lots of fouls which sadly could not be capitalised on from the earned free kicks. That is until the last minute of the game whenanother free kick was won just left of centre, outside the penalty box. Up stepped Harvey and as cool as you like produced one of his trademark perfect strike into the top right corner with Fry looking on in bewilderment. What a strike to seal the game and desperately needed points.

Now back in touch with the teams immediately above them the pressure builds further with four games ahead which will continue to test the strength of character of the squad. Without doubt this has been shown so far in the last few games and needs to be maintained as they have shown that they can compete at this level in the County league and stave off the drop.
