Cheddar 0 Wrington Redhill 3
Preparations for the new season ahead in the Premier Division of the Somerset County Football League got underway for newly promoted Wrington Redhill on the 3g pitch at Worle School against Cheddar FC of the first division of the Toolstation Western League.
Making their debuts for Wrington Redhill were goalkeeper Logan McKenzie and Ashley Towler who can fit into midfield or as a striker. Both players are welcomed to the Club and played their parts in an entertaining opening match in very breezy conditions.
From the start Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi pounced on a lose ball and fed a delightful ball to Sam Harvey and his effort at goal was snuffed out by the Cheddar keeper. This set the pace of the opening quarter hour as Wrington Redhill were on the front foot with , Harvey Ollie Clements and Ryan Pugh prompting play from midfield and front three Jack Hutchings, Joe Creese and Ferguson-Obamwonyi looking to put their team ahead.Ryan Pugh saw a sweetly struck free kick just go wide of the far post.
For Cheddar their main threat came down the right flank and Jordon Bonner was his usual alert, stout self, snuffing out the danger duly backed up by defensive team of Ethan Johnson, Dan Ferguson and Josh Pitt, the latter seeking to get forward as much as possible in support.
It was agreed to play three half hour periods to allow both squads of players match time and the first period ended without any goals. For the second period Ashley Towler, George Fake, Ethan Williams, Matt Walsh, Leigh White, and Rory Thomas were introduced and it was Fake who opened the scoring with a crisp long range free kick finding the net as the Cheddar keeper could only get a fingertip to the ball. Further chances were created, and one found Towler one on one with the keeper and he confidently picked his spot and rifled the ball unto the net. Cheddar had their moments and McKenzie did well to thwart their efforts in a solid start with his new team.
The final third period saw Wrington Redhill dominate most of the play and it was no surprise when another goal was added by Jack Hutchings placing his shot well following some good approach play.
