TED MOSS
We are sad to learn of the passing of Ted Moss, one of the most highly regarded of our players from the 1950-70’s era. For many seasons Ted was centre-half and captain of the First Team, playing in the top divisions of the Bristol and District and Weston-s-Mare leagues.
Like most of our players of that time, Ted grew up in the village and only ever played for Wrington, though he undoubtedly had the ability to play at a higher level. Not the tallest or biggest of defenders, but Ted was as hard as nails, as many a centre-forward would testify. An excellent footballer and reader of the game, Ted was also well known for his sliding tackles. An opposing winger only had to get past our full-back and Ted was across to launch into a perfectly timed tackle that would put the ball and often the winger into touch. Not a man of too many words, Ted would just grin and trot back to his central position.
Ted’s other speciality was being our penalty taker. Talking recently to John Fear, Dave Reynolds, Roy Clements and Trev Cleeves from that era, none of us can remember Ted missing a penalty in all the years he took them. Indeed he saw it as a failure if he didn’t hit the stanchion !!
Towards the end of his career Ted was happy to play in the Reserves, his experience, guidance and calm head helping many young players.
When he finally hung up his boots Ted very much enjoyed playing bowls on the local greens.
As a young lad it was a privilege for me to watch and then play in the same team as Ted for many seasons. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The club send our sincere condolences to his family and many friends.
