Wrington Redhill 3 Middlezoy Rovers Reserves 0

On Saturday 8th the visitors to The Rec was table topping Middlezoy Rovers Reserves. This was to be a test for the Wrington Redhill small squad with absentees due to Easter commitments but nonetheless the team started strongly on the front foot and the lively front two of Joe Creese and Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi had efforts thwarted  in the early stages. The league leaders had a spell of pressure which saw Matt Hill make a couple of good saves.

With the last kick of the first half Joe Creese calmly slotted home to give his side a 1-0 interval lead.

After the break Middlezoy upped the pressure and had the clearer openings but the defensive heroics of quartet, Josh Pitt, Dan Ferguson, Ethan Johnson, and Jordon Bonner throwing their bodies on the line kept the visitors at bay.

Wrington Redhill then took control of the midfield through Sam Harvey, Leigh White and Ryan Pugh getting more on the ball and the ever-dangerous Travis Yule-Turner was causing a lot of problems to the visitors’defence. He nearly scored from a thirty yards effort that bounced awkwardly in front of Rich before clearing for a corner. Now in the ascendency  the lead was extended when from a short corner Ferguson-Obamwonyi crossed into the box and Dan Ferguson was there to head past the languishing Rich.

The home side was in control now and introduced substitutes Jack Hutchings, Ollie Clements and Kyran Garrett to add further impetus and Hutchings, returning from a shoulder injury, slid a neat ball into Yule-Turner to race clear and find the net putting his side 3-0 and seal the game.

This was an all-round great team performance and set them up for another tough and important game of the season against promotion rivals Somerton Town the visitors to the Rec two days later.

Player of the Match was awarded to Josh Pitt

Somerton Town

So, Monday morning arrived following a night of heavy rain, and everyone was anxious to learn whether the pitch had stood up to the elements. An early morning warning had been issued that there was a lot of standing water covering several areas and arrangements were made for a local level 5 referee to conduct a pitch inspection. Anxiously awaiting his verdict, the news was not good as he deemed it unfit for play and sadly the match was postponed. This proved to be an anti-climax to a good week of results and will now add to the congested fixture list between now and the end of the season for both teams.
