Wrington Redhill 1 NaiIsea Utd 2
On a very heavy pitch which made passing of the ball very difficult, Wrington Redhill came out on the wrong side of a game that they definitely deserved a point, against visitors Nailsea United. With a little more quality in the attacking third of the pitch the home side may have been able to create more of a threat at goal from the amount of possession they had. Nailsea took an early lead when the ball fell to Elliot Moore on the edge of the box from a blocked clearance and he left keeper Regan D’Arcy no chance as he slotted home from close range.
From this setback Wrington Redhill had a strong spell of dominance as first a Joe Creese header from Jordon Bonner’s cross was palmed away by Bradley Cohan in goal for Nailsea. Another dangerous ball from Bonner grazed the crossbar, Creese then latched onto a through ball and was brought down by Nailsea’s Ewan Williams who was shown a red card for denying a clear chance on goal.
It wasn’t until the second half that Wrington Redhill broke down the 10 men Nailsea when a long ball from Rhys Farmer found Jake Harris in space and he squared the ball to Creese who was brought down in the box by keeper Cohan. Creese composed himself and duly converted the penalty to bring the score level at 1-1. As an aside the keeper was fortunate to remain in the game as he had already received a yellow card and a lot of referees would have shown another for this infringement.
The hosts continued to dominate without creating another clear-cut scoring opportunity. An injury to the influential Ayrton Phillips saw him being withdrawn and the changes made seemed to let Nailsea back into the game with quick counter attacks. With minutes left on the clock a free kick was conceded on the edge of the box and the ensuing delivery into the goal area hit the back of a Nailsea substitute Jack Stephens and went over the line and effectively clinched the match points with a stoke of fortune.
In the brief time left Wrington Redhill desperately pushed for a deserved equaliser, but time ran out.
This defeat keeps the side in the bottom three of the league but there were spells in this game that showed the squad have the talent and are capable of to claw their way up the table. Manager Leigh White added ‘It’s tough in this division and we need to realise that the majority of our players are playing the highest level so far in their careers so they must stick together, stay positive and take on board and implement the information imparted by myself and the coaching team and then results will come’
