Wrington Redhill 2 Street Reserves 0

There were only  four games played in the entire Somerset County League as the constant rain all week washed out all the other fixtures. Wrington Redhill were able to entertain Street Reserves but had to switch the game to the 4G pitch at Worle to avoid adding to a fixture backlog.

The hosts were seeking a first win in three games to keep in contention with their promotion rivals against bottom of the table Street and were boosted with the debut of Tom Llewellyn in the central midfield position. As for the visitors’ team this included a number of relatively new signings looking to salvage their season.

However it was Llewellyn who had the first chance of the game when he drove into the Street penalty area, beating a couple of defenders along the way but his shot was saved by Callum Smalley who was in for a busy afternoon ahead. This was the story for most of the first half with Wrington Redhill failing to convert numerous scoring opportunities.

A strike from Josh Pitt struck the crossbar  and more goal attempts from front three Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi, Joe Creese and George Fake were all blocked or saved by Smalley. Nearing half time the breakthrough came when the ever impressive Ferguson-Obamwonyi embarked on a trade mark mazy run across the box then rifling a superb shot into the bottom right corner for a 1 nil lead.

Street however retaliated with a fright when their impressive Toby Stephens struck a post with Matt Hill beaten, a timely reminder that another goal was needed to the kill off the resistance of the visitors.

The second half was totally dominated by Wrington Redhill and the back line of Pitt, Dan Ferguson, Ethan Johnson and Jordon Bonner were rarely tested although in front of them clear cut chances were still not being carved out.  Ryan Pugh had replaced Fake and linked up well with Bonner down the left flank with Creese taking a more central strike position. Ollie Clements came on for Sam Harvey in midfield to help Ayrton Phillips to maintain control in that area.

The lead looked to have been increased when Ferguson-Obamwonyi cut in the box and unleashed a superb left foot drive which Smalley somehow tipped onto a post and safety. Next it was Pugh who had a good effort blocked as it was virtually one way traffic at this stage.

The game was eventually sealed when with ten minutes to go Llewellyn received the ball from a Bonner and Pugh exchange, and on the half turn fired a firm low drive into the net from twenty yards, a well-earned reward for an impressive performance.

Late on Kyran Garrett replaced Creese to gain more first team experience and help close down the game which ended with a 2-0 scoreline, a victory which lifted the team back up to third spot in the league.

Player of the Match was awarded to the Magic Man himself aka Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi.
