Somerton Town 5 Wrington Redhill 0

With the pitch at the Recreation Field still unplayable due to the incessant rain experienced throughout the week Wrington Redhill agreed to play the game away to Somerton to help avoid a fixture back-up for later in the season. However, it turned out to be a disaster as the team suffered a heavy loss at 5-0 to their hosts. The defeat saw them slide to second bottom of the division and a relegation spot with their opponent’s leap frogging them in the process.

It was Wrington Redhill who started positively, and they could have gone ahead as keeper Jake Davies saved a George Fake effort following a good build up as his legs diverted the ball. As the half hour mark approached Somerton took the lead as the visitors’ frailties at defending set pieces saw them failing to clear a free kick and James Brown pounced on the loose ball and fired past Matt Hill. Going into the break at 1 nil down, at least they were still in the game.

Somerton were now playing down the slope and took the initiative and inexplicably the heart seemed to go out of the team as passes were going astray and gladly accepted and used to punish them. This led to salvo of soft goals in rapid succession with a final 5-0 drubbing as the second half was played in torrential rain and water pooling on the surface the longer the game went on. Brown went onto score another goal with Robbie Haggett 2 and Krystian Woods.

To cap this most disappointing performance goalkeeper Matt Hill was red carded in the dying minutes of the game for one two many comments to the referee as Ollie Clements donned the gloves to see the game out.

A lot of soul searching is needed by the whole playing, squad lacking in confidence, late withdrawals of availability, commitment to training and a return to basics and execute the Management Team’s instructions on the field. The players are well capable of this but need to reset their approach to games and get back to the form we know they can achieve and get the season back under control.
