Saltford 2 Wrington Redhill 7

Wrington Redhill made the trip to Saltford seeking more points in their push for promotion. Their opponents have always proved to be a difficult obstacle with past visits earning mixed fortunes. However, a potential banana skin slip- up was put to rest with a first half display producing scintillating football of high intensity, superb passing and movement ripping their hosts to shreds with an onslaught of relentless attacking football.

From the midfield Tom Llewellyn was running the show alongside Ayrton Phillips, up front Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi was at his skilful best and Joe Creese’s movement and pace was frightening Saltford’s defence to death. Add to that the intelligent runs of Sam Harvey and finishing brought great success.

It was Creese who started the rout when he raced beyond the defence and calmly drove past George Dancey. Two more goals were added by Harvey, his first a brilliant free kick from outside the box followed by Creese increasing the lead, with a quality strike, to 4-0 at the half hour mark.

There was a moment to draw breath when unfortunately skipper Dan Ferguson picked up an injury and was replaced by Ethan Johnson alongside Leigh White in defence. Within a few minutes of his arrival an unfortunate mix up with keeper Matt Hill saw Johnson’s back header trickle into his own net. Shortly after on a rare counterattack the hosts scored again but their jubilation was cut short when straight from the kick off another rapid passing sequence saw Harvey complete a hat trick. Just before half time Ferguson-Obamwonyi was felled again, this time in the penalty area and up stepped Creese to score and record a hat trick of his own for a 6-2 interval lead.

At the start of the second half Saltford huffed and puffed but Wrington Redhill effectively strolled through the rest of the game but still added a further goal when White passed into Ferguson-Obamwonyi who threaded the ball to Jack Hutchings who made no mistake in driving home.

As the half progressed Creese was replaced by George Fake and Ollie Clements replaced Ferguson-Obamwonyi who had provided assists for six of the goals. Clements filled the right defensive role with Josh Pitt movedforward.

It looked like another goal was going to be added when an excellent cross into the box by Jordon Bonner found the head of Fake, but he was just unable to get a firm glance into the net. Shortly before the end Llewellyn chipped over the home defence with Harvey reacting quickest but Dancey made a good save with the game ending at a resounding 7-2 victory.
