Burnham Utd 2 Wrington Redhill 2

Hot on their heals following their excellent performance at Saltford the squad travelled to Burnham on Bank Holiday Monday seeking to extend their six-win run. They were disappointed to find an uncut pitch with the grass length seemingly intended to prevent them from producing their normal fast flowing passing football. The conditions proved to be a leveller with only one side looking to play.

However, Joe Creese continued his great goal scoring run when he was put through from an Ayrton Phillips pass and deftly dinked it over the advancing keeper Tom Edwards to take an early 1-0 lead. Wrington Redhill pressed on to extend their lead but were unable to convert their chances.

Burnham gradually worked themselves into the game from long balls into the channels where their speedy wingers  proved lively to the tactic employed. From one such attack the visitors defence failed to deal with a cross into the box and were punished when Ben Gates was on hand to get an equalising goal.

Still feeling the affects of a niggling hamstring injury skipper Dan Ferguson was replaced by Leigh White for the second half. Sam Harvey and Tom Llewellyn were trying everything to open up a determined Burnham defence, but it was the home side that took the lead from one of their quick counterattacks with Jaymie Whitehouse jinking in the box and firing wide of Matt Hill giving no chance to get a hand to the ball.

Wrington Redhill showed why they are promotion contenders using grit and determination to get back into the game which saw some frantic defending by the hosts. The lively Creese was brought down just outside the box and the free kick was superbly struck and curled into the right corner by Harvey to deservedly level the score. It was virtually all one-way traffic after this as the elusive winning goal was sought. Unfortunately, all the efforts from Lewellyn, Ethan Johnson, George Fake and Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi were denied in getting the vital winning goal.

It was disappointing not to come away with all three points, but this could yet prove to be another valuable point with just three fixtures left where still two out of four teams are in the running for promotion behind league champions Uphill Castle, our next opponents on Saturday at Weston-super-Mare FC 3G pitch.
