Wrington Redhill 2 Nailsea &Tickenham 1

After last week’s Somerset Senior Cup victory, Wrington Redhill were back to league business with a local derby, hosting Nailsea & Tickenham Reserves. With George Fake suspended for this match Travis Yule-Turner replaced him and Jack Hutchings moved into the central attacking role.

The first scoring opportunity fell to Hutchings when put through one on one with the visitors’ keeper Tom Hand but was unable to find the target with his effort. The home side continued to exert pressure on Nailsea’s defence with in-form Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi a constant threat with his dribbling and runs into the danger zone.

Completely against the run of play Nailsea took the lead when Joel Bayliss’s glanced header found the net from a free kick following a catalogue of mistakes by the home defence from which lessons were learned and brought them back in focus to the job in hand.

The team bounced back with two goals within five minutes. Ferguson-Obamwonyi ventured forward again down the right side of goal and cut the ball back to Leigh White who finished with a shot into the roof of the net. Soon after Hutchings was on the score sheet when he tapped in the second when Hand spilled a Jordon Bonner cross. Wrington Redhill went on to control the rest of the half, with good periods of possession, ending 2-1 in their favour.

At the start of the second half Joe Creese replaced Yule-Turner who was carrying an injury and the team seemed to sit back and let their opponents come on to them. White made way for Ayrton Phillips, who was recovering from injury,  and soon got into the thick of the game alongside Ollie Clements and Sam Parkinson. Two good chances fell to him from set pieces with Clements providing the openings, but both narrowly missed the target.

Although Nailsea sought to get something out of the game, their main threat coming from the pace and trickery of Bayliss, the Wrington Redhill defence stood firm and keeper Matt Hill never really tested and the game ended with a well-earned 2-1 win.

This was a good victory, moving a place up to sixth in the league and hopefully will be the start of a good run of results to strengthen the continuing advance up the table.
