Somerton Town reserves 1 Wrington Redhill 3

It was cup action this week for Wrington Redhill with a 1st round fixture away to Somerton Town reserves in the Somerset Senior County Cup. It was important to get off on the right foot and avoid a potential banana skin upset and following a high tempo start they soon found themselves in front. The mercurial Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi cut in from the right to let fly with a shot that found the bottom corner of the net giving home keeper Rio Sherwood no chance. That lead was doubled soon after when Joe Creese crossed from the right for Jack Hutchings to slot home.

Travis Yule-Turner and Creese both had chances to increase the lead but didn’t take them. Rhys Farmer making his full debut with his new team and Leigh White were having a comfortable afternoon in the heart of the defence splaying the ball around mostly to full backs Josh Pitt and Dan Ferguson. Ryan Pugh and Ollie Clements were seeing plenty of the ball in midfield and the visitors were dominant without making the most of the chances they made. A lull in proceedings when the visitors took their foot off the gas was punished when Somerton pulled a goal back. A lob was half saved by Matt Hill who then scrambled back in an attempt to claw the ball off the line. He thought he’d done enough but the goal was flagged by the ever honest Wrington Redhill linesman Kieren White.

The 2nd half saw the introduction of Ayrton Phillips back from injury and Sam (Parky) Harvey who’d missed the last 2 games through illness. The impressive Harvey eased any worries when he played a quick one two with Creese before slotting coolly past Sherwood for a 3-1 lead. George Fake came on for Hutchings and was immediately off target with a free kick before going close with a header from a Joe Creese cross before Creese himself had a shot well saved. All 5 subs were used, Jordan Bonner was introduced to freshen up the midfield and Matt Walsh came on at right back to shore things up.

Next week the lads are at home to Wells City reserves who will no doubt provide a sterner test but a 3-1 cup win is always good for the confidence of the whole team.
