Clutton 5 Wrington Redhill 1

It was Somerset Senior Cup third round action for Wrington Redhill this week away to Clutton.

Wrington Redhill started on the front foot and dominated the game for the first twenty minutes but just could not turn this superiority into goals. Joe Creese twice failed with good headed chances, one just wide of a post, the second saved by keeper McKenzie Denman from close range. The lively Jordon Bonner  played a nice one two with Dan Ferguson, but he was unable to get his shot on target.

It was vital to get the elusive first goal, but it came against the run of play when a break by Clutton saw a cross eluding the grasp of debutant keeper Regan D’Arcy and stabbed into the net for a 1- 0 lead. A second soon followed with an unbelievable strike from all of 30 yards flew in off the crossbar and somehow the visitors had contrived to find themselves behind at the interval.

It was essential to get a goal back as soon as possible to get a foot back into the game. Ethan Williams replaced the struggling Matt Walsh at half time and further early changes were made with Jake Harris and Jack Hutchings brought on to freshen up the attack. The switch looked to have worked as Harris made his mark with a goal and looking menacing on the ball.

The comeback proved short lived with defensive frailties again letting them down. Player /Manager Leigh White held up his hands to allowing his marked attacker to elude him from a corner into the box which was punished with a tap in to increase the lead to 3-1. It got worse when Ethan Johnson sliced into his own net and probably the worst goal of the lot when 4 defenders failed to move to clear a corner with the ball being bundled over the line to see the game end with a 5-1 defeat and exit from the cup.

The scorers for Clutton were Jake Canning, Saul Gibbs, Jake Hawkins, Alex Price and Taylor Southcott.

Despite the scoreline the young newly signed goalkeeper Regan D’Arcy can hold his head up high at a very confident and competent first taste of the game at this level having made a few excellent saves and nerve free display.

The team must now seriously focus their minds on improving their league form and start to climb up the table by sticking together and regain the form we all know they are capable of.
