Fry Club 7 Wrington Redhill 2

This game turned into a reality check for the Wrington Redhill squad of the additional quality they face on their return to the top division after their hard fought promotion.

Their first 3 games have all resulted in hard fought draws with good starts, missed chances and soft goals conceded meaning dropped points. This game followed the same pattern but ended in disaster at the hands of a very good Fry’s team.

For 10 minutes the visitors looked the brighter side and should have taken the lead when Sam Harvey was played in by George Fake but his shot was well saved by home keeper Callum Fry. Wide men Joe Creese and Reece Ferguson-Obamwonyi were looking dangerous in possession but half chances were spurned.

At this point Fry’s started 2amto play longer passes and went ahead when a resulting corner was headed home by Jordan Robinson who was unmarked. That was quickly followed by a 2nd when a weak shot from Jack Jenkins from the edge of the box slipped through the hands of Logan McKenzie into the net.

Despite this setback Wrington Redhill rallied and soon pulled one back when Fake turned on the edge of the box and bent a left foot shot into the corner of the net. This however was short lived as poor communication and resolve from a simple throw in saw the defence switch off allowing Toby Cook to lay the ball into Harry Hale to stroke it past McKenkie. The lead was extended to 4-1 when a shot from Provert was parried straight to Cooke who headed it back past McKenkie.

The 2nd half started badly when a penalty was awarded against Ashley Towler for a trip and Olie Colcutt tucked the ball into the bottom corner to make it 5 – 1. This effectively sealed the game and the management team of Leigh White, Sam Clements and Mark Brown made  some wholesale changes. White himself came on as well as well as Jack Hutchings, Matt Walsh, Ryan Pugh and Ethan Williams for Ferguson-Obamwonyi, Fake, Ollie Clements, Rory Thomas and Harvey all making way

The overworked defence of Dan Ferguson, Ethan Johnson and Josh Pitt were unable to stem the flow of goals as Hales added another. On a positive note Jack got his first goal of the league season when he scored at the back post from a flick on.  It was however the home side who finished the scoring when Jenkins scored his 2nd to make it 7-2

Feeling shell shocked by this scoreline it’s not been easy to write this report following such a loss but we have not suddenly become a bad side. When all is not going our way it’s time for the players to look at their own performances before blaming others. The message is clear, get back together, bounce back and show the resolve from last season. Back your management and each other to the hilt and the good times will return.
