Congresbury A edge local Derby

It’s usually hard to find positives when you lose your local derby but after a really rocky start to the season, Wrington A team really show signs of coming together and forming a good close knit group who enjoy their football. With constant calls from the Reserves and even the first team, James Marshall and Jonny Marsh have worked wonders to keep the side together and forge a real team spirit. It helps to have a good keeper and Billy Thomas again showed what a good shot stopper he is with several outstanding saves. Dean Rix and Rob Buckland are forging a solid centre back partnership with Sam Fowkes and Tom Lucas providing pace and width from full back. Sam Fowkes had a particularly good game with his sweet left foot providing a constant threat in conjunction with the reliable Paul Faulkner. Jonny Marsh worked his socks off as usual in the midfield whilst Fin Taplin and Harry Quigley provided plenty of energy in midfield. James Marshall competed for everything at Centre forward and Mike Fairs looks really sharp playing off him. Mike has given the As another dimension with his willingness to run the channels and use his pace and trickery.
It was therefore disappointing that after such a bright start it was once again a set piece that saw Congresbury take the lead. Thomas was particularly unlucky having pulled off a fine reaction save only to see the rebound fired in. The game swung to the other end and James Marshall was unlucky not to finish off some more fine play from Fairs as he slid in with the goal at his mercy. Wrington were therefore still well in the game as the half ended and strangely it was the losing side that seemed happier at the break.
However, sharp words in the dressing room saw Congresbury start the half the stronger and a well worked overlap on the right saw the perfect cross result in a tap in to extend their lead. In response, Wrington brought on Jake Betts in Centre Midfield who immediately showed his class by controlling the midfield and Wrington started to dominate. Along with Paul Faulkner now playing more centrally, they pulled the strings and with Harry Quigley playing further forward chances started to fall Wringtons’ way. Mike Fairs ran onto a through ball from second sub Clements and delivered the perfect cross for Quigley to head in at the far post. It was Congresbury now hanging on and another perfect delivery from Fowkes saw Marshall bring out a good save from the home keeper. However, as Wrington became more desperate for the equalizer and pushed further forward a counter attack won a free kick on the edge of the box. Although a soft decision, there was no argument with the superb curly effort that nestled in the top corner effectively settling the match.
On this performance there is still plenty of time left in the season for the A team to surprise a few of the more fancied teams and for them to enjoy their football.
