Wrington Redhill 2 Chilcompton Sports 1

Scott Campbells Wrington Redhill team don’t seem to have got the hang of playing against teams from a higher division. When one of the better teams from the Premiere division turn up at your ground you’re supposed to run out, strut your stuff for 10 minutes then watch admiringly while they give you a lesson and hope they don’t beat you by 5 or 6! Not this lot, right from the off they were at it, not only closing down and tackling but creating chances of their own and enjoying good spells of possession. They were expected to be overrun and left all cattywampus in formation but they were certainly not. Then, 10 minutes in, left back Jenson Holmes went on a run down the left evading a couple of tackles before feeding the ball into Harrison Campbell who swept it past goalkeeper Garlick from close range. At the other end Chilcompton were creating chances of their own , James Billing’s header was well saved by Rob Hannah and Alfie Dix shot wide when well placed. Cam and Lew Milkins with Jake Marshman were certainly not allowing the visitors to rule the midfield and Backhouse, Skuse and Harding-James stood up well against Chilcompton’s experienced strike force.

Half time 1 – 0

Chilcompton certainly enjoyed the majority of possession in the 2nd half but when Morgan Skipp hit the post then Louis Gurner shot wide from the rebound there was a buzz of ‘just maybe’ amongst the home support. Chilcompton we’re pushing on but leaving gaps at the back and the ever lively Luke Weeks was put through by a Skuse clearance but trying to run with the ball on a heavy surface was difficult and he was chased down by 2 defenders. With 20 minutes to go Jake Marshman’s determined run and perfect pass through a quite thin gap from the right which allowed Jack Hutchings to nip in between Garlick and Carpenter to make it 2 nil. Now it was backs against the wall time as Chilcompton threw everything into attack. A barrage of corners and crosses were defended well with Rob Hannah’s punching and handling skills tested time and again. With 5 minutes to go the inevitable happened when Cam Milkins was judged to have brought down Ryan Gay in the box. Gay got to his feet and scored from the spot but Wrington Redhill held on for a remarkable win. Neither team left a tittynope of energy out there in the end, everyone was absolutely exhausted..
