Wrington Redhill 3 Stockwood Green 0
With Storm Bert and high riding Stockwood Green arriving at around the same time Wrington Redhill knew they were in for a tough afternoon. Stockwood turned out in their change kit of all tangerine but they needn’t have bothered, their usual kit is a light green with white whereas the home team’s is much darker (almost avocado) with black. Soon after the game kicked off Wrington Redhill went in front when Jack Hutchings made a penetrating run leaving the Stockwood midfield flat footed then stroked a pass to Luke Weeks on the right who crossed to Jake Marshman and his well placed shot easily beat Austin Empson in goal for the visitors. 10 minutes later after a period of almost constant pressure Wrington Redhill went 2 up up as Marshman returned the favour and laid the ball into the path of Weeks who’s powerful shot went in off the bar. This spurred Stockwood Green into action and they then enjoyed a good spell of possession with Westerside bringing out a good save from Rob Hannah in goal for the home team before a Templeman shot cannoned down off the bar before being cleanly collected by a very surprised Hannah. A sustained period of pressure by the visitors continued whilst Wrington Redhill ham temporarily lost their rhythm, Manager Scott Campbell tried to explain what was going wrong but he eventually gave up said ‘I might as well be talking Cantonese for all the notice they took’.
Half time 2 – 0
Scott evidently got his message across at half time as Wrington Redhill started the 2nd half just like the 1st. A poor clearance by Empson fell to Billy Coombs his own centre half but he was robbed of the ball by Marshman who nodded it into the path of Cam Milkins. He noticed the keeper was out of position and slotted it back past him from outside of the box for a 3 nil lead. Chances came and went at both ends, Josh Skuse blocked a Tepleman effort when he looked sure to score and at the other end Empson nudged a Hutchings shot just wide. Solid defensive performances from Backhouse, Harding-James and Holmes and midfield engine room displays from Dan Berry and Josh Oliver kept the Stockwood response in check. With the subs truly needed on such an energy sapping pitch manager Scott Campbell was able to use them all to see his side over the line.
Especially satisfying result looking at the number of 1st choice players out injured and with a very capable striker serving a ban. (He’d apparently suggested the ref use his whistle as a suppository!)
Supporters Man of the Match. Jake Marshman. Good contributions in all 3 goals and as usual his big bag of tricks on show for us all to enjoy!
