Wesftield 3 Wrington Redhill 2
The 1st half of this game started with a flurry of action. For the visitors Chris Jones had a great free kick acrobatically tipped over the bar by Barter in goal for Westfield. With Milkins and Marshman pulling the strings in the middle of the park it wasn’t long before Jones was in action again as he flicked the ball past Westfield’s Oliver Jones who bundled him over for a clear penalty. Jones got himself up to score the opening goal with a well stuck shot into the bottom corner. Almost immediately Westfield had a penalty of their own when an attempted clearance rebounded to Ryan Allen who was tripped as he tried to get his shot away. Allen got to his feet and dispatched his penalty neatly past Rob Hannah in goal for the visitors. The rest of the 1st half was a pretty dull affair with both sides huffing and puffing but it needed something, a spark or a dose of Worcestershire Sauce to liven it up.
Half time 1 – 1
The 2nd half was however full of quality will both goalkeepers called into action time and again. Rob Hannah was at full stretch to tip a Nathan Flynn effort around the post and the resulting corner was only half-cleared before it fell to Sam Gregory who tucked it away to put Westfield 2-1 up. Wrington Redhill found a new lease of life now and were taking the game to Westfied. Backhouse and Weeks were combining well before fierce Jack Hutchings cross from the right somehow evaded everyone rushing toward the Westfield goal. Soon after free kick from the right floated over the jumping pack before bouncing up nicely for Josh Skuse to head home the equaliser. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw Westfield scored the winner direct from a corner as Rob Hannah looked to be impeded by 2 jumping attackers and the cross curled directly into the net. Many Wrington Redhill players protested long and hard without success but anyone earwigging behind the away dugout would have heard manager Scott Campbell reciting one of his favourite lines ‘don’t keep moaning at the ref, they never ever change their decision no matter how much you complain’. Now in desperate search of an equaliser Wrington Redhill threw everything they had at Westfield who stood firm and it was not to be as the game ended 3-2.
This group of players from Wrington Redhill started the season not knowing what to expect at this level but have more than held their own in every game. It’s still early days but if you extrapolate the facts and figures of what’s gone on so far they look like a top half side in this division.
