Hard Earned point at Westfield

Westfield 1 Wrington Redhill 1

Wrington Redhill’s first point of the season arrived at Westfield in a game they probably should have won. Both teams took a while to get going on this firm pitch in windy conditions and it took 20 minutes for the 1st decent chance to appear. Jack Hutchings nicked the ball off a nefilibata in Oliver Jones and exchanged passes with Harrison Campbell then Luke Weeks then probably took 1 touch too many before firing his angled shot which home keeper Tom Redwood did well to turn around the post. At the other end Ryan Allen won the ball on the edge of the box and teed up Sam Millard with a good chance which he squandered  as he shot feebly wide. The visiting back 4 of Parslow, Harding James, Skuse and Berry stood up well to a lively Westfield front line but Rob Hannah in goal was still busy rushing off his line to clear some dangerous through balls. It was half an hour in when Wrington Redhill took the lead with a moment of brilliance from Luke Weeks (Sponsored by John West Contractors Ltd). As a long ball dropped over his shoulder he took 1 perfect touch to control it before unleashing a thunderbolt of a right foot shot into the top corner of the net. As halftime approached a Cam Milkins corner from the left was glanced goalward by skipper Harding-James and looked to be drifting in at the far post until Westfield’s full back Liam Ford cleared off the line.
Half time 0 -1
The 2nd half saw Lew and Cam Milkins and Jake Marshman tightening their grip on midfield for the visitors who almost got a 2nd goal when’s mix up between Jack Peters and his keeper Woods allowed the ball to run free in the area. Cam Milkins chased it and got there 1st but his shot from a very tight angle struck the post. On a hot day with maximum effort required it came as no surprise when manager Jack English brought on a flurry of subs as Jensen Backhouse, Ollie Hapgood, Kris Bell and Jensen Holmes replaced Parslow, Marshman, Campbell & Berry. Whilst Wrington Redhill were creating the better chances Westfield were certainly never far behind the pace and kept probing and prompting themselves. Somewhat against the run of play Westfield’s equaliser took everyone by surprise when Liam Ford got free on the left and fired in a cross that Sam Millard turned in from close range. The back line were calling for an offside flag but at Wrington Redhill we don’t let snollygosters run the line and cheat so the goal stood. 1 all now with 10 minutes to go but neither of these sides was going to settle for a point. Despite some determined effort attacks at both ends were largely fugacious so eventually the points were shared as referee Euan Robertson blew for time.
