Defeat at home in the Cup

This was a close fought game in the Somerset Premier and 1st Division Cup with both teams creating good chances. Ashcott’s Archie Smith was an attacking threat on the left seeing plenty of the ball but was brilliantly marked by the home team’s Charlie Eason’s (sponsored by D.G. Carpentry, Maintenance and Gardening Services) lightning quick, tough tackling performance. Cam and Lew Milkins were  weaving their usual magic in midfield with the lively Marshall Hale (sponsorship available) Ollie Hayward and Jake Marshman causing problems for the Ashcott back line. The breakthrough came midway through the half when a long diagonal pass from Eason was just kept in on the left by Cody Parslow who crossed to Hale (sponsorship available) who, after a slick exchange of passes with Lew Milkins rifled his shot past Will Pope in the Ashcott goal. Soon after Rob Hannah (sponsored by Tim Bush) had to be at his best when Ashcott’s Millens cut inside left back Ollie Andrews and unleashed a cross shot. Hannah had to dive and gather the ball cleanly in front of the onrushing Ashcott forwards. Wrington Redhill certainly had the better of the 1st half but Hannah had to be on his toes to tip a Townsend shot over right on half time. Even our smellfungus boss couldn’t complain at this point could he?

Half-time 1 – 0

The 2nd half got underway with more of the same really but slowly, bit by bit, Ashcott grew into the game. Hannah was called into action and made 2 flying saves from Rufeo Taylor. Connor Harding-James (sponsored by The Plough Inn Wrington) and Josh Skuse were busy in the heart of the home team defence but seemed to be in control as time ticked by. Jake Marshman was becoming isolated up front chasing clearances but generally Wrington Redhill’s best chance seemed to be hanging on for a 1 nil win but the clock seemed to be moving in widdershins. That went wrong with 5 minutes remaining when Ashcott’s Ollie Luce slipped past Jensen Holmes to smash a low shot past Hannah for 1 all.

Penalties!

The penalty shoot-out went to sudden death at 4 – 4 and at 5 all Cody Parslow’s attempt was just wide and Townsend stepped in to send the visitors through . Curry night for the lads tonight when they will be beerboarding the management team about ‘what’s the strongest team if we’re all available?’
