Close game at Ashcott ends in defeat

Match report by Steve Milkins
Ashcott 1 Wrington Redhill 0

Wrington’s new campaign has been eagerly awaited over the summer break, following a

successful 1st campaign for this new generation Wrington squad.

Todays first game of the new season, was also the first competitive game under new

management following the departure in pre-season of last seasons hugely popular Scott

Campbell. The entire club wish Scott nothing but success for the future.

New gaffer Jack English is now at the helm, assisted by new assistant manager, Will

Hillman, everyone at the club wishes them success.

The squad travelled to Ashcott Firsts, with justified confidence having completed the

double over them last season.

English had experimented in the pre-season playing three at the back, but opted for last

seasons tried and tested back four of Connor Harding-James (Captain), Josh SKUSE and

full backs Jenson Backhouse and Dan Berry.

The pitch although reasonably flat, was very hard due to the recent hot weather and

lacked grass, so the order of the day surely was a short passing game playing the ball on

the surface.

Wrington started reasonably brightly and it didn’t take long before Jenson Backhouse

whipped in a dangerous ball to the box, but it didn’t come to anything.

The first shot of the game came in the 4th minute, from Ashcott’s Sam Loveridge, however

Backhouse was the ever dependable defender and blocked the shot for the games first

corner.

The game developed in the early stages to become a bit of a long ball game by both sides,

which didn’t result to much and felt a bit frantic, crying out for some composure on the ball.

Wringtons first real effort on goal came in the 17th min, after some good work on the left by

last seasons top goalscorer, Jack Hutchence, spreading the ball to Luke Weeks on the

right, who unleashed a shot which produced a good save from Ashcott keeper, Will Pope.

The first half was fairly incident free, before Wringtons hard working midfielder, Josh Oliver

took a nasty elbow to the face causing a blood injury and the games first yellow card to

Ashcott’s Rufio Taylor.

The half draw to a close at 0-0, with both sets of supporters hoping for more in the second

half.

The second half kicked off, and it wasn’t long, the 47min, before Ashcott forced a corner,

showing their attacking intent early.

The next few minutes saw lots of drama, firstly Sam Loverdige of Ashcott was awarded the

games second yellow card in the 52nd minute, before just 2 minutes later Ashcott being

awarded a penalty. Before the penalty could be taken, it appeared that something was said to the referee and

Sam Loveridge was given his marching orders, Ashcott down to 10 men.

After the delay, Ascots Dempster King slotted home the penalty, 1-0.

In the 60 minute, Wrington made their first change, with Luke Weeks brought off for new

signing Jaiden MORRIS making his league debut for the club up front.

Just two minutes later, Wrington keeper, Rob Hannah, saved a certain looking goal to keep

Wringtons hope alive.

The half drifted on, before further subs were made by both teams, with Jenson Holmes

replacing Dan Berry in the 72nd minute.

Ashcott utilised some “game management” tactics, however the ref saw it as time wasting

and so yellow carded goalscorer King.

Further subs were made by Wrington in the 78th minute, including another new signing

making his competitive debut for Wrington, Elliot Edwards.

It must be noted, that Ashcott keeper displayed very good sportsmanship in the 81st

minute kicking the ball into touch to give possession rightfully back to Wrington after a

stoppage.

Wrington didn’t threaten much in the way of goal opportunities in the entire match,

although plenty of hard work was put in, including that of midfielders Cam and Lewis

Milkins who worked tirelessly as usual.

An incident off the ball in the 88th mInute saw Jack Hutchence receive a yellow, which was

a fair decision, however the Ashcott players kick out initially must have gone unnoticed as

he received no punishment.

The game came to an end a few minutes later with Ashcott picking up the 3 points.
