Yatton& Cleeve A 1 Wrington Redhill reserves 1.
After a month without a game the reserves had a glorious chance to challenge for the top of the league against Yatton on a perfect day and setting with the pitch in superb condition. They started brightly with Curtis,Thomas and Selman combining to set up Johnson who brought out the first of many fine saves from Gareth Flynn. With Betts continuing his superb form controlling the centre of mid field, chances came…..and went at regular intervals. Thomas and Flynn provided a succession of crosses but the home side defended valiantly.This wasn’t to say that the game was one sided and with Yatton’s Harry Hughes latching onto a number of long balls James Williams made two good saves to keep the score level. Selman and Johnson always carried a threat up front for the away side but as half time approached they became more and more frustrated. Betts seemed certain to score as his low powerful drive hit the post but rebounded to safety.
The second half continued in the same vein with Faulkner,Flynn and Selman all forcing great saves from Flynn in the Yatton goal. Wrington brought on Holland and switched to a back three but the home team responded by bringing on Thomas Tinel and pushed Jamie Foncette into a front three themselves. As a result the game became even more open. Finally the deadlock was broken when Johnson escaped down the left wing and his deflected shot found its way into the net. With the relief of getting their noses in front, it looked like the away side would add to their lead but instead, within 30 seconds Yatton equalised. Another long ball evaded everyone and Foncette’s shot somehow found its way through two goal line defenders to totally deflate the reserves. Unfortunately, the game became fractured with Burnett and Foncette booked and with both teams tiring the game rather fizzled out with the overall feeling that Wrington Redhill had missed their chance. However, Yatton deserve all the credit having defended well and in numbers but always carrying a threat especially once Foncette had joined Hughes up front.
