Defeat at Combe St Nicholas

Combe St Nicholas 3 Wrington 0

With 4 regular team members away plus the influential Cam Milkins serving a ban this was always going to be a tough trip for Wrington Redhill. The prolepsis was not good. That said the newcomers and those returning from lay-offs certainly didn’t let themselves down. The 1st half saw the home side kicking down the slope and creating the better chances. Connor Harding-James and Elliot Edwards were kept busy in the heart of the visitors back line as were full-back Ollie Habgood and Jensen Holmes. The 1st real chance came when a loose ball fell to Combe’s Richard Hebditch on a the edge of the box and he fired a shot at the bottom corner of the net but a flying save from 17 year old goalkeeper Frankie Walker turned it wide. The home team did go in front when Connor Bryant ran at Holmes from wide on the right and went sprawling from the slightest touch as soon as he got into the box for a penalty. Bryant then jumped to his feet to take the penalty himself and gave Walker no chance from the spot. Still Wrington Redhill tried to take a hold on the game and Lew Milkins (sponsored by the Rec Bar) exchanged passes with Jake Marshman to feed Hutchings but he was well marshalled and blocked off time and again. 1 became 2 after half an hour when the ball into the area rebounded to Richard Hebditch on the edge of the box and he despatched an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of the net. Combe were trying  to build a bigger lead to take into the 2nd half when they’d be kicking up the slope and began bombarding the visitors box with long balls. Walker dealt with them all catching some and punching others clear. This was going well until right on half time he an giant centre half Harding James (sponsored by the Plough Inn Wrington) went for the same cross leaving the later with a split lip, mild concussion and talking even more blatherskite than usual.

Halt-time 2-0

At time time Jensen Backhouse replaced the injured centre half as Wrington Redhill searched for a way back into the game. Euonia was not a something  endured by manager Jack English and his ‘let’s get something from this game’ attitude was certainly needed today. Ollie Coombes, Lew Milkins and Jake Marshman were seeing plenty of the ball but the front 3 of Max Holder, Jack Hutchings and Weeks were never set free to get their shots away and a series of corners and Weeksy long throws were the biggest threat to the home team lead. Never happy to sit back and accept defeat Wrington Redhill had everyone up for a free kick from the right. The ball was defended well by Combe and cleared up to Bryant to make a quick break. He fed the ball into Hebditch whose goalbound shot was blocked by Milkins and the ball rebounded to substitute Declan Berry who scored from close range. The game ended 3 – 0.
