Burnham Utd 2 Wrington Redhill 3
On a rock hard pitch at Burnham the game kicked off 5 minutes late as ground staff filled in a couple of cracks in the pitch caused by the long dry summer. Any later and we’d have needed a plenilune to get this game played. The 1st 10 minutes were pretty even and incident free as the 2 sides eased into the game and got a feel for the firm conditions. The 1st clear chance fell to Burnham as Morgan Loosemore was put through by Barnshaw but Rob Hannah (sponsored by club President Tim Bush)was quick off his line and a double save kept the scores level. Burnham’s Charlie Harding was seeing plenty of the ball on the fight wing and giving Parslow a torrid time and created 2 good chances for Loosemore both of which were comfortably saved by Hannah. At the other end Harrison Campbell was his usual lively self causing problems running at the Burnham back line. The deadline was broken when Burnham’s keeper Tom Edward took too long with the ball at his feet and Jake Marshman blocked his attempted clearance and rolled the ball to Jack Hutchings (sponsored by OES Electrical) to chip it into an empty net. Keeper gaffs are a rare thing in this league and much appreciated like apricity on a cold December day. Burnham battered away with long balls to skipper and regular top scorer Curtis Bradshaw but the aerial bombardment was dealt with by Connor Harding James and Dan Berry sat the heart of the Wrington Redhill defence. 1 became 2 as half time approached when Hutchings fed Marshman who’s perfectly weighted pass put Harrison Campbell (sponsored by Bristol Home Rewires) free on the left. Campbell still had much to do as he headed straight for goal outpacing fullback Owen before sliding the ball under the advancing keeper
Half time:- Burnham Utd 0 Wrington Redhill 2
The 2nd half started with Burnham in a determined mood and it was important now that Cam and Lew Milkins win their midfield battles. Jensen Backhouse had his work cut out at right back as tricky winger Bishop saw more and more of the ball. Luke Weeks was having a quiet game by his own high standards mostly because he had to keep his eye on Burnham left back Jackson who was looking to get forward at every opportunity. The 3rd goal came for the visitors when Burnham’s back line were pressed and eventually robbed of the ball which fell invitingly to Campbell who lifted his shot over everyone and into the net. 3 nil job done you’d think but no there was still much to come from this pulsating game. With 12 minutes left Burnham were awarded a free kick just outside the box and Ben Jackson stepped up to rifle it into the top corner giving Hannah no chance. This gave the host side the boost they needed and the game became even more competitive with tackles flying in and tempers becoming frayed on both sides all dealt with expertly by top referee Ian Smith. With 2 minutes remaining Burnham’s Ben Gates made it 2-3 after a series of miss timed and miss hit clearances by the visitors back line left him free to score from close range . The game ended much to the frustration of Burnham and relief of Wrington Redhill who were glad of the 3 points they almost squandered. The clubhouse sombremesa from both sets of supporters was probably ‘what could have been’.
