Watchet v Wrington Redhill

Quarter Final Somerset Cup

Wrington made the long trip to Watchet that in the end, ended in a brave defeat.

Wrington kicked off and forced an early corner that was well defended. From then on Wrington mounted a rearguard action against a strong Watchet side that almost bought them victory.

The game fell into the pattern of Watchet trying to find gaps in the hardworking defensive shape of the Redskins. A number of half chances fell to Watchet who failed to convert them. Then on 19 minutes Wrington won a free kick, the ball was swung over and Wrington forward Cheeseman was pulled to the ground with the referee pointing immediately to the spot. Cheeseo stepped up and converted the penalty. 0-1

Wrington worked hard and kept the home team at bay until halftime

H/T 0-1

The second half kicked off and Watchet continued to press the away team. The home team  continued to miss a number of half chances. Then on 70 minutes, for once, a ball played across the Wrington box was not cleared and the Watchet forward stepped in and tapped home from close range. 1-1

Wrington dug in and saw the game out to the end of ninety minutes. 1-1

Extra time

Little happened in the first half on extra time but in the 8th minute of the second half of extra time Watchet took the lead. The Watchet forward received the ball deep in the Wrington box and turning attempted to cross the ball but he miscued the cross and the ball trickled into the Wrington net with goalkeeper Clarke committed to covering the attempted cross. 2-1.

Then Wrington had their best spell of the game as they went in search of an equaliser. A cheeseman header just cleared the bar and Ben Ricketts had a close range header saved by the Watchet keeper. Then with minutes remaining a lovely cross from Ricketts was met by Cheeseman only to see the ball go over the bar.

In the last minutes with the Redskins pushing forward Watchet sealed the win with a third goal. 3-1

A great effort by the lads who never gave up but in truth, on the day, the best team won.  Good luck to Watchet as Wrington now concentrate on gaining points and climbing the league table.
