Saltford 4 Wrington Redhill 0

Wrington Redhill’s Somerset County League programme is proving tough this season with the weather playing havoc with their fixtures and getting a run of games going. The team needs games to settle into a rhythm and produce performances fitting of a new young team with lots of talent to offer. This was only their second game in January following 2 in December and only 1 in November. Player/Manager Leigh White and his assistants Mark Brown and Sam Clements have been working very hard with their training sessions but there is nothing better than playing full games week in and week out to see the results of their efforts. White admits ‘it’s frustrating to see so many games postponed which disrupts what we are trying to achieve. We have brought in some really talented young players and they need playing time at this level but we have every confidence in their abilities to perform when playing regularly. We desperately need to get a good run of games in so we can settle down and produce positive results on the field. The hard work will continue as we stay focused on our long term aims.

Turning to this game away to Saltford a debut was handed to another teenager in Sam Harvey a promising midfield player. There was not much to choose between the two sides in the first half with neither side creating any clear cut goal chances. The main concern was for Ollie Clements who clattered into a metal barrier upright injuring his head with the game delayed for a period whilst he received treatment. Happily it proved to be not serious but he was withdrawn from the game as a precaution and his presence was ‘sorely’ missed!

In the second half the hosts caught their visitors twice from rapid attacks following danger in their own box and put the ball past Sam Clements in goal standing in for the regular ‘keeper who was unavailable. They went on to strike another two goals although this was never a one sided game and Wrington Redhill were cruelly punished for seeking something out of the game by pushing players forward and being caught out by counter attacks.
