illminster FC v Wrington Redhill

Saturday 25th April 2015

Wrington kicked off on a cool day at illminster.  The team were sent out with instructions to pass the ball and this they did from the outset. Several good Wrington passing moves keep the home team on their toes. But on 22 minutes Wrington went behind to a neat finish. The ball was played to the edge of the Wrington box where the ball was then slipped to the overlapping full back who placed his shot past Keeper Clarke in the Wrington goal.

illminster now had a foothold in the game and had some of their best moments. However Wrington always dominated possession and on 33 minutes a neat turn by Louis Keane in the box saw him crash a fierce shot against a post. The good play continued with Rowcliffe and Bradley showing up well in midfield and White doing an excellent screening job in front of the Wrington Back three of Murray, Clements and Johnson.  The game reached half time with no further goals.

H/T 1-0

The second half followed the same pattern as the first. A series of Wrington corners led to the equaliser. On 64 minutes a Wrington corner was half cleared and fell to Mike Rowcliffe on the edge of the box. Mike hit his shot and the ball emerged from a crowd of players to nestle in the corner of the net. 1-1

From then on Wrington took control but missed a series of half chances with wayward shooting and some poor finishing. Then as the game entered it’s 5th minute of extra time (no one knows where that amount came from) Wrington were caught with a sucker punch. The ball thrown in and arrived at the edge of the box in a carbon copy the player was closed down but the full back appeared on the right of the Wrington box and again he was slipped in and scored with a strong cross shot. 2-1

The game was restarted and immediately the Referee blew for full-time.

A game that Wrington played all the football on a difficult surface but missed chances cost the team again.

Captain Sam Clements summed it up best when he said, ‘ We ran the game from start to finish but missing so many chances and failing to concentrate at the end cost us the win’.

Next week we are in action again on Tuesday evening (28th) when we welcome Frys Club to ‘The Rec’. KO 6.30

MOTM Leigh White: Always available for a pass and screened the back three well from any attack.
